3. Trace the water. Stepping into the water can help you catch your breath and keep your head above the water without having to swim. Do the eggbeater motion as above, and use your hands to maintain balance by "pedaling" - keep your upper arms straight on the surface of the water, and imagine your hands are like butter knives on bread. Move one hand clockwise, and the other hand counterclockwise. 4.Use your hands to lift the body from the bottom. If you're underwater and want to get up, use your hands to lift yourself up. Place your arms straight above your head, and move them quickly down by your sides. This can lift your body several inches. Repeat until you rise to the surface.
